The Falsificationist's Thesis

``Theories are construed as speculative and tentative statements intended to account for features of the natural world, and are created to overcome the problems of previous theories. These speculative theories are then to be rigorously tested by experiment and observation. Theories failing to gain observational or experimental support are rejected and replaced by appropriately modified or new speculative theories. Science progresses by trial and error, with only the ``fittest'' surviving''
